As
public relations specialists we serve as advocates
for businesses, nonprofit associations, universities,
hospitals, and other organizations, and build
and maintain positive relationships with the
public. We use as professional instruments
press release, press conference, statement
and fact sheet.
As
public relations specialists we handle organizational
functions such as media, community, consumer
and governmental relations; marketing campaigns;
interest-group representation. Sometimes we
handle it as a pr or a communication campaign;
sometimes we use it as a classical marketing
tool.
However, public relations is not only "telling
the organization's story." Understanding
the attitudes and concerns of consumers, employees
and various other groups also is a vital part
of our task. To improve communications we
establish and maintain cooperative relationships
with representatives of community, consumer
and public interest groups and with representatives
from print and broadcast journalism.
We write and distribute classical communications
instruments like press releases and statements
and we prepare your press conference or your
television interview.
Most
of the public relations specialists are former
journalists and communication specialists.
They worked within the media for years, we
too. We learnt to prepare and write professional
press releases and contact people in the media
who might print or broadcast our material.
Only
few people know: Many of the radio or television
special reports, newspaper stories, and magazine
articles start at the desks of public relations
specialists like us.
We
arrange and conduct programs to keep up contact
between organization representatives and the
public. For example, we set up speaking engagements
and often prepare speeches for company officials.
We find and organize employers at community
projects; make film, slide, or other visual
presentations at meetings and school assemblies;
and plan conventions. In addition, we are
responsible for preparing
annual reports and writing proposals for various
projects.
People
like us handle publicity for an individual
or who direct public relations for a small
organization
and a company may deal with all aspects of
the job. We contact people, plan and research,
and prepare material for distribution. We
also may handle advertising or sales promotion
work to support marketing.
